The not the website website. Random thoughts, inspirations, and imagery that may or may not be found on our regular website.

Jared and I just got back from a great shoot in NYC earlier this week and I realized that the city in general grows on me more and more every time we go back. From a photographer’s perspective the light is amazing everywhere you go. We have been discussing this phenomenon and we think that it must be the filtered light bouncing around the tall buildings that make every street a photo studio waiting to be harnessed. I was super excited to test out a new camera I recently purchased so whenever there was a bit of free time Jared and I took to streets and explored around. Myself, armed with my shiny new Sony RX100 and Jared, armed with his trusty iphone4 (I dont know how he does it but he’s a genius with that thing).  Highlighting a short stay in a great city, here is a small collection of the images from the RX100.  The iphone images will be coming soon!

See you again soon New York!

When will we meet the mother already!?!?!

In a couple weeks we will be photographing one of our absolute favorite television casts yet again! We are incredibly honored to have have shot the How I Met Your Mother gallery 2 years ago and now much of that imagery is finally popping up all over. Below are some of the new advertisements as well as some of the others that came out over the last 2 years. The half illustration pieces were loosely based on a shoot we did a while back with Rainn Wilson on which we illustrated with sharpie pen for comedic affect. Those can be seen here http://smallzandraskind.tumblr.com/post/3705202995/is-rainn-wilson-part-man-part-cartoon

We are so excited to be going on another photographic & creative journey with the HIMYM gang and the 20th Century Fox Creative team to whom we are so thankful for bringing us back to this project yet again!

Tinashe!

One of our absolute favorite people to shoot in the world is the young and uber talented rising star Tinashe. She recently signed a deal with RCA and is constantly releasing her own self produced mix tapes and media content. These are two of her most recent covers which we shot for her as well as some of our favorite outtakes. We are extremely proud to be a part of her rise to what will surely be super stardom.  You can get more familiar with Tinashe at her website www.tinashenow.com

Getting back to Basics

For all the photo nerds out there….

I’m realizing that the photo industry might be hitting a plateau on the “pixel race”. This has come from recent conversations with some of my most respected photog friends etc…. It’s a good feeling! Some camera companies (like Canon) are showing signs of backing off of more and more megapixels as they build cameras and focusing on faster processing and better performance when it comes to other attributes. After all, it gets to the point where file sizes are too huge to even deal with and would never be used to the fullest anyway. Like scanning a 35mm neg to be 60,000 pixels wide…. when would you ever need that? Soon we might just hit a “sweet spot” when it comes to MP size and we won’t have to worry about selling our old digital cameras every year. I just had to rant for a moment because it makes me feel alot better about the technology in general :)

Here’s an example…. the new 1dx from Canon. They chose to replace the flagship camera (1ds mark iii) with a camera that downsized the chip size from 21 to 18 MP’s in order to get the maximum performance out of the chip. Interesting move Canon. Oh…and its $2000 less expensive too.

Can’t wait for The New Girl to Return on FOX

Just randomly thinking about how we can’t wait for The New Girl to come back this fall on FOX and how we hope Zooey wins that Emmy! Here’s a couple photos we shot separately of stars Zooey Deschanel & Max Greenfield.

ABC Family Guys of Summer

A few weeks back we photographed six of the ABC Family channel’s leading men at an amazing house on a hilltop way above Malibu. These are a few of our favorite outtakes of Drew Van Acker, Derek Theler, Daren Kagasoff, Matt Atkinson, Ian Harding & Jean Luc Bilodeau.

A week ago our country was shocked to hear of the largest mass shooting in its history had taken place in Aurora, Colorado early on the morning of July 20th. By chance I happened to be in Parker, Colorado town which borders Aurora. As a photographer the need to document whatever I could either at the site or around it began to boil inside me. The problem was I had forgotten my camera at home in LA in a mad dash to make it to the airport. I had my Iphone 4 and my mother in law’s point & shoot which she kindly let me borrow so I decided I was going to make a small instagram gallery as my way of telling whatever story I could from Aurora. These are a selection of those photos, 3 of which were picked up by The Hollywood Reporter and published in this week’s issue. It isn’t much but I feel that as a professional photographer no matter the genre in which we make our living, we owe it to ourselves and others to lend our vision to these types of events. I will forever feel connected and effected to this tragedy and hope to expand on this connection in future projects down the road.

Rise….To the occasion.

So in honor of the Dark Knight’s box office debut this weekend, I thoughtI’d share an image I took recently.

On the way back to my car the other day I noticed this youthful couple canoodling at a bus stop. As I neared they stopped me and struck up a conversation. After we chatted for a moment about my mohawk, the man bet me i couldn’t guess his age (of course i guessed low) and he proudly boasted about how if i really knew his true age i’d fall over haha. I had my Leica with me so I clicked a couple images which prompted the man to say “You want a real photo?”. He then proceeded to swoon his lady as she giggled like a school girl. I doubt they noticed the ironic signage behind them as they were so wrapped up in each other. I snapped a couple more frames, thanked them for being so awesome, and left before it got too steamy hahaha. Here’s to you Grey Knight! Thank you for making my day!

You’ve probably seen these around town…

Smallz & I shot these photos for E!’s new show “Opening Act” only a handful of weeks ago and the show will debut in just another couple of weeks. There’s a good chance you’ve seen these billboards and posters plastered all over your city lately so we thought we’d show you what they look like up close. This project was particularly interesting because it presented a unique set of challenges such as directing an audience of 150 extras. We are very proud of how it all turned out. Feel free to let us know what you think…

for Leica’s sake…

Remember when you were young and you got your first camera?   You would go out for endless hours and take picture of butterflies, sunsets, and tree branches just cause you were so into your new toy? A couple days ago I had a chance to buy a little Leica D-lux 5. I feel like a kid with his first camera again.  Here are some shots from the Griffith Observatory this weekend. Because sometimes it’s good to take photos simply for the sake of taking photos.
